Abstract
Molecular biological approaches are increasingly applied in environmental sciences and analytics. This mini-review evaluates the status quo of these techniques in the field of microbiological water quality analysis. Principal possibilities (RNA/DNA analysis, PCR, DNA-profiling, microarray, DNA chip, FISH, in Silico analysis, microscopy, cytometry) and main fields of applications are presented. In addition, limitations of molecular biological techniques for the microbiological water quality analysis are discussed. Basic research issues and applied aspect are included.
