Abstract

Sigmund Freud’s (1856–1939) understanding of the therapeutic relationship, including its
emphatic and ethical dimensions, characterizes psychoanalytic treatment. The link between clinical technique and ethics was further investigated by Austrian and Hungarian
psychoanalysts in their emigration. Inspired by the legacy of Sándor Ferenczi (1873–1933)
and Michael Bálint (1896–1970), the „Independent Group“ of the British Psycho-Aanalytical Society draw its attention to the fact that its ethical stance builds the starting point
for psychoanalytic clinical technique, and that the treatment develops along a therapeutic
relationship. The exploration of subjective experience occurring within the intersubjective
relationship between psychoanalysts and patients unfolds an experience of intercorporeity. Its multi-layered understanding of the therapeutic relationship and its deep
social commitment led psychoanalysis to therapeutic modifications, which could considerably impact on medicine, psychiatry, psychotherapy science, and nursing
