Abstract

Background: Back pain should be viewed in the context of posture, convictions, psychological stress factors, illness behavior and social factors. Whereas a simple clarification model is sufficient for acute unspecific back pain up to 6 weeks, this should be supplemented by a psychosocial component after 6 weeks at the latest. Methods: In this article special emphasis is placed on the psychiatric exploration and thereby on the differentiation between red flags and yellow flags. Furthermore, the physical examination and conventional forms of therapy are illustrated from the perspective of psychiatry.
