Abstract

The use of digital media in everyday life has been expanding at a remarkable rate. This scoping review provides an overview on the literature with respect to digital media usage of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as well as the associated risks, benefits and effects on their well-being. The online database PubMed served as the source of the primary scientific literature research, which yielded 120 results. Ten of those met our predefined inclusion criteria. Secondary search produced one additional eligible paper, bringing our sum-total to eleven. Results indicate that the conveniency of social interaction and communication, that is provided by social media and online games, can help people with ASD to form and maintain friendships. The main risks consist of the danger of cybermobbing and the neglect of offline activities. Overall, non-excessive social media use and online-gaming seem to improve wellbeing and friendships of autistic people.
