Abstract

Aim: Simulation-based education and training are recommended by current resuscitation guidelines; however, simulation training is utilized heterogeneously especially in German-speaking European countries. Therefore, the working group “Paediatric Simulation and Patient Safety” of the Austrian Society of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine aimed at defining standards for the delivery of in-house simulation-based resuscitation training. Material and methods: A total of 19 experts in paediatrics and adolescent medicine, neonatology, paediatric intensive care, paediatric and adolescent nursing, education and training as well as medical simulation defined the focus and structure of the recommendations during a working group meeting. Subgroups searched for scientific literature and formulated subchapters, which were then reviewed and revised by the whole author group. The preliminary final version of the recommendations was sent out to all working group members as part of a Delphi round for further review. Results: After assessment and incorporation of suggestions from the Delphi round, the 16-page document was approved by more than 90% of all working group members in November 2020. Discussion: The presented recommendations define (minimum) standards for target groups, trainer qualification, contents, delivery, frequency, and learning environment for basic neonatal and paediatric resuscitation training and shall help to ensure the quality of such essential educational interventions.
