Abstract

Agency (A) and Communion (C) are related to social class and sex assigned at birth. Social class is
positively related to self-reported A and negatively related to self-reported C. Furthermore, males
report higher A and females higher C. However, effects of the interaction of class and sex on A and C
have yet to be investigated. Moreover, although subjective social class (SSS) is a relevant predictor,
previous research has neglected it or used composite measures (of class indicators). Finally, previous
research has focused on the domain level (A and C) but neglected the facet level (Assertiveness [AA],
Competence [AC], Warmth [CW], Morality [CM]). Using structural equation models and data from N =
984 participants, we investigated how SSS and sex assigned at birth are related to A, C, and their facets
(AA, AC, CW, CM). We hypothesized that SSS would be positively related to A and negatively related
to C and that these relationships would be stronger at the domain level than at the facet level. From
Social Role Theory, we also expected sex assigned at birth to be a moderator, increasing the positive
relationships between social class and A, AA, and AC for males but not for females. We expected the
opposite for relationships with C, CW, and CM. We found a complex interplay of these variables. SSS
was positively related to A and C, a finding that differs from results obtained with composite measures,
showing that the relationships may depend on the measurement of social class and become blurred
with composite measures. Facets also played a role. Whereas the positive relationship was
comparable for AA and AC, it differed for CW and CM, as SSS was positively related to CW but
nonsignificantly related to CM. Finally, the moderating effect of sex applied to C but not to A.
