In contrast to STS, psychology usually does not situate mental states in broader sociotechnical assemblages. An STS-infused understanding of mental health, however, implies that mental health is co-produced in sociotechnical relations. In this presentation, we—Claudia, an STS scholar, and Kate, a psychologist—introduce unalone, an augmented reality game/programme for school classes that we are co-creating together with other researchers, non-academic experts, and young people in a cross-national European project (ASPbelong). The programme seeks to strengthen belonging and secure long-term sociopsychological wellbeing among adolescents. It diffracts diagnostic conceptions of “mental health” while still allowing young people to grasp the relevance and social constructedness of “mental health”. Through playing unalone, young people experience and reflect on their own role in co-creating mental wellbeing through strengthening belonging with others. The collaborative game makes marginalised perspectives visible and steers the group towards more inclusive behaviour while fostering sensibility for power dynamics in classrooms. Unalone promotes an understanding of psychological wellbeing as contextual and relational, thus exemplifying a power-critical technoscientific application at the intersection of many disciplines. We suggest that such immersive, integrative experiences in learning contexts can assist the intuitive understanding of concepts that are of relevance to both psychology and STS.| Zeitraum | 13 März 2025 |
